Small changes that add up to something significant — for your home, your health, and the planet

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the idea of living more sustainably, you’re not alone. The internet would have you believe it requires a complete lifestyle overhaul, a limitless budget, and the dedication of a full-time environmentalist.

It doesn’t.

The most sustainable approach is also the most practical one — make one swap at a time, starting with the products you use most often and replace most frequently. Over the course of a few months, those small changes add up to a home that’s genuinely cleaner, healthier, and kinder to the planet.

This post covers 15 of the most impactful swaps you can make, room by room — all available through Eco Warehouse, a New Zealand-based store I trust for natural, plastic-free, non-toxic home products.

Let’s start in the room where most of us generate the most waste.

🍳 The Kitchen — 5 Swaps

The kitchen is ground zero for single-use plastic. Cling wrap, synthetic sponges, plastic bags, and disposable wipes — it adds up faster than most people realise. These five swaps make the biggest dent.

Swap 1: Cling Wrap → Reusable Beeswax Wraps

Cling wrap is one of those products that’s so deeply embedded in kitchen life that most people never question it. But a single roll of cling wrap generates a surprising amount of non-recyclable plastic waste — and it’s entirely unnecessary.

Beeswax wraps do everything cling wrap does — covering bowls, wrapping sandwiches, keeping produce fresh — and a single set lasts up to a year with basic care. They’re made from natural cotton infused with beeswax, jojoba oil, and tree resin, which means they’re naturally antibacterial and completely compostable at end of life.

The warmth of your hands moulds them around any shape. Rinse in cold water, air dry, and they’re ready to use again.

Swap 2: Synthetic Sponges → Natural Fibre Cloths

Conventional kitchen sponges are made from petroleum-based synthetic foam — they shed microplastics with every use, harbour bacteria quickly, and end up in landfill after just a few weeks. Not a great trade for something you use every single day.

Natural fibre cloths — made from cotton, linen, or cellulose — are more absorbent, dry faster (which means less bacteria), last significantly longer, and are either compostable or washable. A set of good natural cloths will replace dozens of disposable sponges over their lifetime.

Swap 3: Plastic Food Bags → Reusable Produce Bags & Storage

Zip-lock bags and plastic produce bags are two of the most common sources of single-use plastic in the kitchen — and two of the easiest to replace. Reusable mesh produce bags work perfectly for fruit and vegetables at the market or supermarket, while reusable silicone or fabric storage bags replace zip-locks for snacks, leftovers, and freezer storage.

The initial investment pays for itself quickly — and you’ll never run out at an inconvenient moment again.

Swap 4: Plastic Utensils → Bamboo & Wood Alternatives

Plastic cooking utensils scratch non-stick surfaces, degrade over time, and eventually end up in landfill. Bamboo and wooden alternatives are naturally durable, don’t scratch cookware, look beautiful on a kitchen bench, and are completely biodegradable at end of life.

Bamboo in particular is one of the most sustainable materials available — it grows extraordinarily fast without pesticides or fertiliser, and requires a fraction of the water that conventional timber needs.

Swap 5: Plastic Bin Liners → Compostable Bags

If you’re not ready to go completely liner-free (a valid option for dry waste), compostable bin liners are the next best thing. Made from plant-based materials, they break down in a home compost or commercial composting facility — unlike conventional plastic liners which persist in landfill for centuries.

Pair them with a kitchen compost bin for food scraps and you’ll significantly reduce the volume of waste going to landfill from your kitchen alone.

🛁 The Bathroom — 4 Swaps

The bathroom is the second biggest source of plastic waste in most homes — shampoo bottles, deodorant containers, disposable razors, skincare packaging. These four swaps address the most common culprits.

Swap 6: Conventional Deodorant → Natural Deodorant

This is the swap most people are most nervous about — and the one that surprises them most once they make it. Conventional deodorants typically contain aluminium compounds, synthetic fragrances, and parabens, delivered in a single-use plastic container that can’t be recycled in most NZ councils.

Natural deodorants have come an extraordinarily long way. The Slo deodorant range available through Eco Warehouse is a particular favourite — it smells beautiful, lasts all day, and comes in packaging that’s either compostable or reusable. Several Eco Warehouse customers have specifically mentioned it as the product that converted them from sceptic to believer.

The transition period is real — give your body two to three weeks to adjust — but most people who make the switch don’t go back.

Swap 7: Plastic Toothbrush → Bamboo Toothbrush

Around 3.5 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away globally every year. They’re not recyclable in standard kerbside recycling and they persist in landfill — and oceans — for hundreds of years. A bamboo toothbrush performs identically to a plastic one, lasts the same amount of time, and the handle is completely compostable at end of life.

It’s one of the simplest, most impactful bathroom swaps you can make — and at a similar price point to conventional options, there’s really no reason not to.

Swap 8: Conventional Sunscreen → Natural Sunscreen

Most conventional sunscreens contain chemical UV filters — oxybenzone and octinoxate being the most common — that are absorbed through the skin, have been found in human bloodstreams, and are toxic to coral reefs. In New Zealand, where UV levels are among the highest in the world, sunscreen is non-negotiable — but it doesn’t have to come with those trade-offs.

Natural mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide as a physical UV barrier rather than chemical filters. They sit on the skin rather than absorbing into it, are reef-safe, and the best formulations have come a long way from the thick white paste of earlier generations. Eco Warehouse stocks natural sunscreen options that go on smoothly and don’t leave residue — something reviewers specifically note.

Swap 9: Bottled Liquid Soap → Natural Bar Soap

The average plastic soap or shampoo bottle takes 450 years to decompose. Bar soap comes package-free, lasts longer than its liquid equivalent, and — when made with natural ingredients — is gentler on skin and the water system. A single natural bar soap replaces multiple plastic bottles over its lifetime.

Look for cold-pressed or handmade bars with simple, recognisable ingredient lists — the fewer the ingredients, the better for sensitive skin and the environment alike.

👕 The Laundry — 3 Swaps

Laundry products are among the most chemical-heavy in the average home — and the plastic packaging they come in is notoriously difficult to recycle. These three swaps are simple, effective, and make a genuine difference.

Swap 10: Conventional Laundry Powder → Natural Laundry Powder

Conventional laundry detergents contain synthetic surfactants, optical brighteners, artificial fragrances, and phosphates — compounds that are hard on sensitive skin and harder on waterways. Natural laundry sheets use plant-derived ingredients that clean just as effectively, rinse away completely, and don’t linger in waterways or affect aquatic life.

They’re also often more concentrated — meaning less product per wash and less packaging overall.

Swap 11: Plastic Dryer Sheets → Wool Dryer Balls

Dryer sheets are single-use, non-recyclable, and coated in synthetic fragrance and chemical softeners that transfer directly onto your clothes and skin. Wool dryer balls are reusable for years, naturally reduce static, soften clothes by agitating fibres during the drying cycle, and can reduce drying time by up to 25% — saving energy at the same time.

Add a few drops of your favourite essential oil to the balls before a cycle for a natural fragrance boost without the synthetic chemicals.

Swap 12: Plastic Pegs → Natural Wood Pegs

A small swap — but one of those satisfying ones that removes plastic from an area of your home you’d never thought to question. Wooden pegs are durable, look beautiful on the line, and are completely biodegradable. They also tend to have a stronger grip than cheaper plastic alternatives, which is a practical bonus on a breezy New Zealand washing day.

🏡 Living Areas & Cleaning — 3 Swaps

The cleaning products most of us use throughout our living areas are among the most chemically intensive in the home — and the most frequently purchased, which means the most packaging waste. These three swaps clean just as effectively without the chemical load.

Swap 13: Chemical Cleaning Sprays → Natural Multi-Surface Spray

Conventional cleaning sprays typically contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals — ammonia, chlorine, artificial fragrance, and preservatives — that linger on surfaces, affect indoor air quality, and wash into waterways with every use. Many are also packaged in non-recyclable plastic trigger bottles.

Natural multi-surface sprays use plant-derived cleaning agents — citrus, vinegar, and essential oil based formulas — that cut through grease and grime effectively without the chemical residue. Many come in concentrated form too, so you refill the same bottle repeatedly — dramatically reducing plastic waste.

Swap 14: Disposable Wipes → Reusable Cleaning Cloths

Disposable cleaning wipes are one of the more egregious single-use plastic products on the market — most contain synthetic fibres that don’t break down, and they’re used for seconds before being thrown away. Reusable cleaning cloths made from natural fibres do the same job, wash and dry quickly, and last for years.

Keep a small stack in each room so they’re always within reach — it removes the temptation to reach for a disposable wipe out of convenience.

Swap 15: Synthetic Air Fresheners → Natural Alternatives

Conventional air fresheners — sprays, plug-ins, and synthetic candles — are among the biggest contributors to poor indoor air quality in the home. They work by masking odours with synthetic fragrance chemicals, many of which are classified as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and have been linked to respiratory irritation and hormone disruption.

Natural alternatives do the job without the chemical payload. Pure beeswax or soy candles with essential oils, reed diffusers, natural room sprays made from plant-derived ingredients, and dried botanical bundles — eucalyptus, lavender, rosemary — all freshen a space beautifully and safely. Your lungs will thank you.

Where to Start

If 15 swaps feels like a lot, here’s the Freshroots approach — pick three. One from the kitchen, one from the bathroom, one from your cleaning cupboard. Make those swaps when your current products run out. Then add three more.

That gradual, intentional approach is far more sustainable — in every sense of the word — than trying to overhaul everything at once. And the reality is that once you start, you tend to keep going. Each swap that works builds confidence for the next one.

A plastic-free home isn’t a destination you arrive at. It’s a direction you keep moving in.

And Eco Warehouse makes that journey a lot easier — everything is carefully selected with eco-conscious values front of mind, ships without plastic packaging, and is backed by a team who genuinely cares about what they’re selling.
